Ontario government response to meeting on future of the Brampton Assembly Plant

November 4, 2026

Lana Payne
Unifor National President

Dear Lana,

Thank you for your letter regarding the future of the Brampton Assembly Plant.

Ontario shares your concern about the uncertainty facing workers and their families. We agree that bringing all parties together is the best way to find a path forward.

We are available to meet with Unifor, Stellantis and the Government of Canada at any time to discuss a long-term solution for Brampton and remain committed to working with all parties to secure a strong future for the plant and its workers.

Our position has been clear and consistent. We expect Stellantis to honour its commitment to Brampton by bringing a vehicle mandate to the plant and restoring full production and employment.

Ontario is firmly opposed to proposals that would replace full vehicle assembly with kits-based operations. Such arrangements generate significantly fewer jobs, provide far fewer economic benefits to Ontario workers and communities, and weaken the domestic automotive supply chain that has been built over generations.

Ontario's auto sector is strongest when vehicles are built and assembled in Ontario, by Ontario workers. Any future plans for the plant should be anchored by a full vehicle assembly mandate that maximizes employment and manufacturing activity at the site.

Workers, their families and the Brampton community deserve a long-term commitment that supports good-paying jobs and protects Ontario's automotive manufacturing capacity. We look forward to continuing these discussions.

Sincerely,

Vic Fedeli
Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade
