Hello Members,
Unifor met with Stellantis yesterday, with Stellantis providing an update on its discussion with federal government officials. The company informed us there has been no change in its position and Stellantis remains on the path to close Brampton Assembly Plant and sell the facility to defence contractor Roshel.
However, company officials also confirmed they remain engaged in discussions with government and have not sold the plant at this time.
Discussions between Stellantis and the federal government have dragged on for months without resolve. This cannot continue.
Therefore, Unifor has written to the federal and Ontario governments to request a four-party meeting with government officials and the company. Our intent is to help make progress in these negotiations and bring about a satisfactory resolution to job security concerns. In the meantime, our union continues to urge all levels of government to use every available measure to stop the closure and sale of the Brampton plant.
Stellantis members, across all facilities, are living with uncertainty about their future and that cannot continue indefinitely. For members at the Brampton Assembly Plant it means not knowing what comes next.
We continue to closely monitor the ongoing down weeks at Windsor Assembly Plant and the impact on our members. At this time, the company has not offered assurances that the footprint and third-shift at Windsor Assembly Plant are secure. If Stellantis is allowed to walk away from Brampton it sets a dangerous precedent, raising concerns about their long-run future in Canada and all facilities, including Etobicoke.
The 97% strike mandate you delivered was an important show of solidarity for your bargaining committee and demonstrates clearly our unity. The union is not in a legal strike position and has not requested a “No Board” report from the Ontario Ministry of Labour’s Conciliation Officer,
We believe a solution can be found, and we continue to assess all options.
Unifor will continue to provide updates on the status of negotiations at autotalks.ca.
In solidarity,
Lana Payne, Unifor National President
James Stewart, Unifor Stellantis Master Bargaining Committee Chairperson
Vito Beato, Unifor Stellantis Master Bargaining Committee Vice-Chairperson
